About Me

I received my Bachelor’s Degree from Harvard University (in Visual & Environmental Studies), my Master’s of Education and Teaching from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa (with teaching credentials in middle and high school English and Social Studies), and my Doctor of Philosophy in Education from the University of California, Los Angeles.

I have experience teaching (and learning from) pre-K through university students in afterschool programs, museum settings, public schools, and universities.

In April 2021, I received the Jan Hawkins Early Career Award from the American Educational Research Association.

In 2022, I published my first book: a graphic novel entitled Power On! (MIT Press). It was listed by Social Justice Books as a “Favorite New Book of 2022” and made the 2023 Texas Maverick Graphic Novels Reading List! It is now available in Korean (Hangilsa Press) and an audiobook version (for blind and low-vision readers) is currently being created by Sina Barham’s group at PRIME Access Consulting. MIT Press is currently working on a Spanish translation of the book, to be released soon!

I am available for speaking engagements, and have been invited to speak at a range of events, including the 2021 Computer Science Teachers Association Conference (closing keynote), National Academy of Sciences Webinar Series (invited panelist), San Francisco Unified School District (invited speaker, Inclusive STEM+CS Summit (invited keynote), etc.
